Making the arrangementsI left the hospital the next day, I was highly anemic and had lost lots of blood but just wanted to be out of the hospital and home with my family. My parents came up from Florida a day early and arrived at my house right after us. Now we needed to plan a funeral.
We were lucky to have family friends that worked at the cemetery and that owned a Funeral Home. My parents took us to meet with them on Friday and we planned for Sammie's funeral to be on Monday, Valentines day. Valentines day was also my parents 35th wedding anniversary. What was supposed to be a celebration turned into the second worst day of our lives.
When we went to the Funeral home Alex had prepared our beautiful Sammie so my parents could see him. He put Sammie in the outfit that his own grandson had come home from the hospital in. There were carnations in Sammie's hands. He just looked like a sleeping angel.
My mom has this thing she does with the grandchildren where she puts on lipstick then kisses them. They all know Grammie's Kissie Lips. While seeing Sammie my mom put on her lipstick and gave Sammie a kiss on the forehead. Sammie didn't miss out on getting Grammie's Kissie Lips. This means the world to me.
Sammie was then Cremated. We asked for a little bit of Sammie's ashes to be saved for us. Alex and John (the man that worked at the Cemetery) gave me a beautiful little urn that was hand painted with little doves on it that had my Sammie's ashes in it. I keep them in my bedroom in a curio cabinet with all of Sammie's pictures and his Patriots outfit.
