Planting Sammie's Tree June 5, 2005

I am finally feeling better and the date was coming up that we found out we were pregnant.  We had planned on planting a tree for Sam all along but had not set a date.  It was last week that started feeling up to seeing people and doing fun things again,  I asked my husband if he would want to plant Sammie's tree on the anniversary date of us finding out we would have a new baby in our lives.  He was all for it.  So in a week I put together a celebration to celebrate Sammie.  I told my oldest, Take the day off, I need you.  I wanted him to read his beautiful poem that he wrote about Sammie.   My husband thinks I am crazy because I ordered 50 butterflies to release after the tree was  planted.   When we did do the butterflies though he loved it too.   I had found 3 beautiful poems about butterflies we had read by various people.  They are below.

The cookout started at 2pm, we ate, the kids played in the sprinkler and everyone had a wonderful time.  The tree planting began at 5:10pm.  Sammie was born at 5:10am so that is the reason I wanted to begin at 5:10pm.  We didn't figure our neighbors would be up for us having a cookout that early.

It turned out to be just a beautiful beautiful day.  We could not have asked for better weather.  Everyone really enjoyed the tree planting ceremony and we all thought of Sammie.  That night while lying in bed talking about the day my husband and I realized we had just created our first happy memory that involved Sammie since his death.  We can now look back on it when we are feeling blue.

Symbol of Hope

A Symbol of Hope
A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

Butterfly Indian Legend

If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first
capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.
Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal
the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who sees and hears all.
In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom,
the Great Spirit will always grant the wish.
So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens to be granted.

We have chosen to keep this tradition by performing this unique form of Indian celebration

Today we release these butterflies to send our wishes and messages of love to Sammie in heaven.

The Butterflies will bring him all of our wishes and love.

Please join us in this special celebration and whisper your wishes to a butterfly.

"Untitled"

As you release this butterfly in honor of me,
know that I'm with you and will always be.
Hold a hand, say a prayer, close your eyes and see me there.
Although you may feel a bit torn apart,
please know that I'll be forever in your heart.
Now fly away butterfly as high as you can go,
I'm right there with you more than you know.
